FINAL PROGRAMME

ENJOY IAŞI

Between October 15 and 17, 2020, the third edition of the Erasmus Days initiative took place, with UAIC among the participants.

For this event, the International Relations Office organized a series of online activities to which all students interested in Erasmus mobilities were invited. Among these was the “My ERASMUS Story in Seven Words” contest, where former and current Erasmus students were invited to send a representative photograph from their Erasmus stay and identify 7 keywords of their experience. All images entered in the competition were made public on October 15 on the UAIC Facebook page, and the photo that received the most likes and shares was designated the winner. The prize consisted of Erasmus promotional materials.

Also on October 15, an online information session was organized where representatives of the UAIC Erasmus Office spoke about the advantages of Erasmus mobilities, the conditions to be met to become an Erasmus student, and the necessary steps for carrying out mobilities abroad. All UAIC students interested in finding out more details about the Erasmus program were invited to the event, and participants had the opportunity to receive answers to questions related to this subject.

The information session was followed by an online guided tour of UAIC in English, conducted by Lecturer Mihai BULAI, PhD, from the Faculty of Geography and Geology. International students present at UAIC at that time were invited to participate, as well as other students from UAIC partner universities interested in conducting Erasmus study or traineeship mobilities in Iași.

The series of Erasmus Days activities continued on October 16 with a session of video testimonials in which students who benefited from Erasmus study and traineeship stays shared their experiences with those interested.

The Erasmus Days events organized at UAIC could be followed on the Erasmus UAIC Facebook page and were dedicated to all participants in the Erasmus program, students interested in Erasmus study and traineeship mobilities, as well as other interested parties.

Between October 24-26, 2019, UAIC organized the Seminar “Universities in a Changing Europe: 30 years since the Fall of the Iron Curtain,” marking the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Iron Curtain. The event brought together rectors and vice-rectors from member universities of the Coimbra Group, the Utrecht Network, the “Universitaria” Consortium, and the Consortium of Universities from the Republic of Moldova, Romania, and Ukraine, as well as the University of Konstanz and the “Grigore T. Popa” University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Iași. The seminar included lectures and debates on the challenges currently facing European universities, particularly those related to Brexit, the spread of populism, and the development of post-truth trends. During the Seminar, representatives of the participating universities signed a declaration regarding the current challenges of European universities. The document represents a joint position of the signatory institutions, which commit to continuing the endeavor of promoting the spirit of understanding and respect for different social identities, in the context of the increasingly intense intolerance manifesting in European societies. Furthermore, the declaration implies a firm commitment to the universities’ mission to seek and defend the truth and critical thinking in opposition to the propagation of post-truth, and stipulates the conviction that British universities should maintain their eligibility in European educational and research programs, regardless of the outcome of “Brexit.”
Friday, October 25, 2019, the University Senate Hall hosted the ceremony organized on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the partnership between the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași and the University of Konstanz, Germany. On behalf of the University of Konstanz, the event was attended by Prof. Silvia Mergenthal, PhD, Vice-Rector for International Relations, Prof. Ulrike Stefani, PhD, academic coordinator of the partnership with UAIC, Dr. Johannes Dingler, Director of International Relations, and Agnieszka Vojta, coordinator for Eastern European partnerships. UAIC was represented at the event by Prof. Henri Luchian, PhD, and Assoc. Prof. Ioan Lihaciu, PhD. Lecturer Susanne Lorenz was also present on behalf of the DAAD. The ceremony opened with a series of speeches delivered by representatives of the leadership of both universities, highlighting the most important milestones of educational and research cooperation between Iași and Konstanz, the benefits for both institutions, as well as the development perspectives of the academic partnership. During the event, professors, researchers, and UAIC students – alumni of the University of Konstanz – shared the experience gained during visits and mobilities carried out at the partner institution. The ceremony concluded with a session of presentations on ongoing projects and new joint initiatives.
Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași (UAIC) hosted, between October 7 – 11, 2019, the first edition of the Librarians’ Staff Training Week. The event was organized by the International Relations Office together with the “Mihai Eminescu” Central University Library. The event program included academic and cultural activities related to the role and life of librarians. During the festive session, Assoc. Prof. Mireille RĂDOI, PhD, Director of the “Carol I” Central University Library in Bucharest, delivered the lecture 2020 Smart Braries – as Digital Citizenship Facilitators & Cultural Paladins. Librarians’ Staff Training Week promotes the visibility of the “Mihai Eminescu” Central University Library within the network of European university libraries, offering an opportunity to consolidate the exchange of best practices between participants and organizers, both in the field of librarianship and international relations. At the same time, the event illustrates the pioneering role of Alexandru Ioan Cuza University and the “Mihai Eminescu” Central University Library of Iași by organizing the first event of this kind in the country.

The “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University, together with the other four state universities in Iași (the “Gheorghe Asachi” Technical University, the “Grigore T. Popa” University of Medicine and Pharmacy, the “Ion Ionescu de la Brad” University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine, and the “George Enescu” University of Arts), organized on Wednesday, October 8, 2014, at 5:00 PM, in the “Mihai Eminescu” Aula Magna, the “Erasmus Welcome Day” meeting for Erasmus and Erasmus Mundus students. The purpose of this meeting, organized at UAIC at the beginning of each academic year, is to facilitate the integration into the academic and cultural environment of Iași for Erasmus and Erasmus Mundus students from EU and non-EU partner universities who come to study at the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași for one semester or an entire academic year. During this event, representatives from the five universities in Iași delivered a welcome speech to the guests, followed by the Erasmus student association (ESN Iași), which presented the activities students will be invited to throughout the year. Additionally, former Erasmus and Erasmus Mundus students shared insights from their own Erasmus experience in Iași. At the end, the guests tasted traditional Romanian dishes, and the event concluded with a traditional Moldavian “horă” dance alongside their Romanian peers.
Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași is a benchmark institution for the proposal, implementation, and management of European projects within the Erasmus Mundus and LLP-Erasmus programs. Since 2011, UAIC has been the first and remains the only university in Romania to coordinate Erasmus Mundus projects. The university coordinates three such projects: EMERGE (a partnership including 17 universities from the E.U. and universities from the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine, and Belarus), IANUS (20 universities from the E.U. and from the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Belarus), and EDEN (15 universities from the E.U. and Israel). Following the selections held within these three projects, approximately 120 scholarship holders will come to UAIC for Erasmus Mundus mobilities during the 2013-2014 academic year. Under the LLP-Erasmus Program during the 2011-2012 academic year, 451 UAIC students benefited from study and traineeship mobilities, with an average monthly grant of 590 Euro for study mobilities (usually 4.5 months) and 660 Euro for traineeship mobilities (3 months). Individual differences exist based on the monthly caps for each country determined by the European Commission. Upon their return, all students received a small supplement from the university’s own funds, totaling 200 Euro per student (study) or 100 Euro (traineeship), beyond the provisions and obligations of the Erasmus program and according to the university’s own decision. Each year, the university determines the average monthly grant based on the institutional grant it receives for that year. For the 2012-2013 academic year, Alexandru Ioan Cuza University was able to increase the average monthly grant for students to 645 Euro for each month of study and 672 Euro for each month of traineeship from LLP-Erasmus Program funds. The monthly grant varies according to the maximum monthly caps for each destination country. Through this increase, Alexandru Ioan Cuza University aims to cover its students’ living expenses abroad more extensively and rapidly; following this decision, the increase can generally be paid during their stay at partner institutions. The university decided that the modest supplement from its own funds (up to 200 or 100 Euro per student) would only be granted to students who, compared to the previous year, received a total grant increase of less than 200 (or 100) Euro as a result of this adjustment. In the 2012-2013 academic year, 360 students of Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași completed or are still carrying out their study and traineeship stays in our 265 European partner universities under the LLP-Erasmus program; we estimate that another 70 students will benefit from traineeship stays this year. The selection process for Erasmus 2013-2014 study mobilities was launched in March of this year and is currently being finalized; according to the results received so far from the faculties, approximately 300 UAIC students have been designated as holders of an Erasmus study mobility in this first stage. For the next academic year, the preliminary level of the monthly grant, pending the actual value of the annual institutional grant to be received by the University, is 600 Euro/month (study), and the maximum monthly grant for the destination country as established by the European Commission (traineeship), respectively. In its 15 years of active participation in the LLP-Erasmus program, over 4,500 UAIC students have served as ambassadors for our university at other European universities, and approximately 900 foreign students have chosen our university as their Erasmus mobility destination. Among the more than 3,500 European higher education institutions participating in the LLP-Erasmus program, UAIC ranks among the top 100 universities regarding the number of students and faculty members benefiting from Erasmus visits to partner universities.
